NEWINGTON — It’s been a long week for the Newington Nor’Easters softball team. They played four games in four straight-days and went 1-3 in their opening week..
The Nor’Easters started the season 1-0 with an 11-4 victory over East Hartford on Monday. They suffered their first loss of the season to Windsor by a score of 8-4 on Tuesday. A day later, on Wednesday, they were defeated by E.O. Smith, 9-2. Most recently, the Nor’Easters suffered a 19-4 loss to the Bristol Central Rams on Thursday.
The Rams took the game over from the start. After a three-run first inning, leading Newington 3-1, the runs tripled in the second inning as they scored, gaining a big 12-1 lead. Newington would remain scoreless for three-straight innings while the Rams erupted for a six-run fourth inning.
Down 18-1 heading into the fifth inning, Newington was able to string together three runs in the inning, but the game would end after the inning with Bristol Central on top 19-4.
In the loss Newington committed six errors to Bristol Central’s one and were out-hit 20-5. Their five hits came from Aniyah Ross, Abby Greaves, Carley Leonard, April Handel, and Ava Johnson. Ross, Greaves, Handel, and Molly Lavoie each scored a run. Johnson and Kiley Connors recorded RBI’s for Newington.
For Bristol Central, Lillian VanNostrand had a big game for the Rams recording four hits, scoring three runs, and having three RBI’s. Like VanNostrand, Emma Kolak, Haley Powers, and Mya Porrini each scored four goals. Myah Steiner led the team in RBI’s with five.
Through their first four games of the season, Ross leads Newington in runs scored with five. Johnson and Maiya Simpson are tied for the most hits on the team with five each.
With the loss, the Nor’Easters have dropped to 1-3 on the season while losing three-straight. Up next for the Nor’Easters will be the Hall Titans at home on Tuesday with a 4:00 start time. Like this past week, Newington will have a busy schedule next week. They’ll play three-straight games after their Tuesday game against Berlin, Maloney, and New Britain. After next week, they’’ play three games each week for the next four weeks, barring any bad weather.
Following their victory, Bristol Central improved to 2-2 and is now on a two-game win streak. They defeated the Platt Panthers, 19-8 earlier this week after suffering losses to Berlin and Plainville to open up the season. They’ll face the RHAM Raptors on the road at 3:45 p.m. on Monday and will look to win a third-straight.
