Andrew Winters, Jr. Obituary

Andrew Vincent “Red” Winters Jr. of Plainville, devoted Husband, Dad and loving Papa, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday February 23, 2024. He is now reunited with his wife of 32 years, Lila Jean (Jacobs) Winters, who predeceased him in December.

One of three children of the late Andrew Winters, Sr. and Wanda (Ladzinski) Winters, he was born on June 8, 1931, and raised and educated in New Britain where his love for sports began.  A graduate of New Britain High School, he excelled in baseball as a championship winning pitcher and went on to play semi-professional baseball, showcasing his talents on the field after graduation.

Andy was a veteran who served his country with honor and pride in the US Air Force during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1956.

After completing accounting courses at LaSalle Extension University and the management program at Rensselaer, he worked at Corbin-Russwin in New Britain, retiring as a Corporate Credit Manager after 45 years of hard work and dedication.  Being a “numbers guy”, Andy enjoyed following the stock market and horse racing statistics as a hobby in his retirement years, in addition to playing golf, going fishing, and cheering on the NY Yankees and UCONN women and men's basketball teams.

Andy settled in Plainville where he raised his four children and was always happy to make friends in the community and support his home town.  He was a member and volunteer for the Wheeler School PTO, where he was instrumental in planning the annual May Fair, was a leader of his sons’ scouting troops and continued to fulfill his love for sports by coaching Plainville Little League and youth football for many years.  A longtime member and familiar face at the Wheeler YMCA, he and Lila remained active there into their 90’s.  Above all, Andy’s family was the center of his being. He rarely missed a game, event, performance or milestone, and was ever present in the lives of his children and grandchildren, making it clear to all they were loved and that family was the priority.  He enjoyed cooking and hosting all kinds of events, including welcoming his children and grandchildren to a weekly lunch date over many years.  Andy is already missed beyond words, though his presence will remain in the hearts of the many lives he touched.

A proud and loving father, Andrew leaves behind his four children, son Andrew Winters III and his wife Jeanne Rolston, daughter Michelle (Winters) and husband Gary Cyr, daughter Eliza Winters, son Timothy Winters and his wife Debbie; eight adored grandchildren: Amanda, Samantha and Matthew Winters, Gabrielle Cyr and her fiancé Ben Bilancieri, Noah and Jacob Cyr, and Joshua and Caitlin Winters; and one precious great grandchild Kinsley (Winters) Carlson. He also leaves behind Lila's two daughters and their families, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.   Andrew was predeceased by his sister Barbara Winters Intagliata and her husband Peter and his brother Richard Winters.

Andrew’s family would like to thank his home health aides, especially Gabrielle Cyr who helped care for Papa and Lila for 4 years, as well as the caring staff at St Mary's Home in West Hartford, CT.

In lieu of flowers, he may be remembered with contributions to the Wheeler Regional Family YMCA, 149 Farmington Ave, Plainville, CT 06062.

Family and friends may gather in celebration of Andrew’s life on Friday, March 1, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville.  A  Mass of Christian Burial and committal will be held at a later date.  For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com
