Eileen Mary Edith Engels, 79, of Bristol, beloved wife of Peter Engels, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 8, 2024 at John Dempsey Hospital after a lengthy illness. Eileen was born in New Britain on August 22, 1944 and was the daughter of the late James V. and Edith (Tyler) O’Brien.
She was a parishioner of St. Matthew Church and a lifelong Bristol resident attending South Side School, St. Joseph Parochial School, Bristol Eastern High School and St. Joseph College in Hartford where she received her master’s degree in education, graduating with high honors, an achievement which she was very proud of. Eileen went from being a student to a career long teacher having taught in the Bristol school system including West Woods and South Side Schools respectively. On August 7, 1971, she married her husband and best friend Peter and together they shared 52 years of love and companionship. In her leisure time, you could find Eileen caring for her flowers in the garden, reading a good book, baking delicious treats in her kitchen, knitting or spending time with her family and friends.
Besides her husband, Eileen is survived by their son; Cmdr. Colin Engels, USN of Fleming Island, Florida and a grandson Ethan Engels also of Florida. She is also survived by her brother: Daniel O’Brien and his wife Carol of Florida and her two sisters: Dr. Eloise O’Brien of Buffalo, NY and Jocelyn Pirro and her husband John of Litchfield, her godson and nephew Richard Nightingale and by several other nieces and nephews. Eileen was pre-deceased by her brother James O’Brien.
A Memorial Mass for Eileen will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew Church, 120 Church Ave, Bristol, CT 06011. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Please visit Eileen’s memorial page at www.funkfuneralhome.com.
